MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT

Effects of Air Knifing on Soil Gas Sample Results

September 18, 2018

Dr. Steve Beukema, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality

Abstract: The use of applying pressurized air and vacuum (air knifing) to dislodge and remove subsurface materials is a commonly used shallow drilling technique in areas of utilities.  It is unknown how subsurface conditions are affected by air knifing or if samples collected from points installed by air knifing would be representative of subsurface conditions.  This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of air knifing on subsurface conditions.  Also to be discussed are other factors, including seasonal variability in temperature and pressure, activities related to an operating truck stop, and heterogeneity in subsurface materials and contaminant distribution, also potentially affect soil gas concentrations.
