Why it’s Time to Modernize Michigan Solid Waste Laws Part 115 of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act governs waste disposal in Michigan. Passed in 1994,
Michigan solid waste law requires counties to plan for and assure disposal capacity for all waste generated in the county. Learn about the origins and intention of the law and understand why Part 115 is not keeping up. We’ve learned a lot about managing waste more productively in the past 30 years – see how proposed changes to Part 115 incorporate recycling, composting, and other productive ways to manage end-of-life materials and what these changes could mean to you and your clients.
Kerrin O'Brien has worked with the Michigan Recycling Coalition in a variety of capacities since 1993. In addition to managing the growing organization, her interest lies in building consensus and movement around pro-recycling policies that work for both the public and private sector. In 2018, Kerrin led the organization’s effort to fund recycling with the passage of the most significant environmental funding initiative in the state. As a nonprofit development specialist and facilitator, Kerrin has led many nonprofit organizations through strategic planning and development efforts.
