MAEP Professional Development Meeting Presents . . .

March 24, 2026

Rapid, On Site PFAS Screening and What It Could Change

Presented by:

Vernon LaLone, Wave Luminia

PFAS work still depends heavily on laboratory analysis, which can slow decisions in the field and in treatment operations. On March 24, Dr. Vernon LaLone, PhD will present an emerging approach aimed at moving PFAS screening closer to the point of sampling, with results available the same day.

He will explain, in practical terms, how field ready sample preparation paired with advanced optical measurements (Raman and SERS) and automated data analysis can provide a calibrated “total PFAS” screening signal. The discussion will also cover how this type of screening can be used alongside standard laboratory confirmation methods, rather than replacing them.

What you will take away:

  • What field PFAS screening can and cannot tell you today
  • Where this technology may be headed and why it matters for future field workflows
  • Case studies and examples of how it has been used to guide sampling and operational decisions
  • A look ahead at additional contaminant applications that may follow

Vernon LaLone is the founder and CEO of Wave Lumina, where he is developing portable field technology for real-time PFAS detection. LaLone has over a decade of experience in analytical chemistry and Raman spectroscopy across the pharmaceutical, biochemical, and materials science sectors. Prior to Wave Lumina, LaLone was a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at Imperial College London and led research and development programs in industry, overseeing multidisciplinary teams focused on advanced analytical method development.
